Viet Nam’s UPOV membership boosted its plant breeding sector

In our newest study, Steffen Noleppa (HFFA Research) explores the socio-economic benefits of Viet-Nam’s membership in the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). The UPOV is an intergovernmental organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, and was established in 1961 by the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (the „UPOV Convention“). UPOV’s mission is to provide and promote an effective system of plant variety protection, with the aim of encouraging the development of new varieties of plants, for the benefit of society.

The study published as HFFA Research Paper 03/2017 shows that, ten years after joining the UPOV, Viet-Nam has achieved many advances in the development of new plant varieties. Viet Nam’s UPOV membership has improved the farmers’ livelihoods and has had a major impact on total sectoral income.
